Have you ever walked into a grocery store without a list of the items you actually need to get?
My god, it is a mess.
You immediately walk in. Your hands get clammy…you start to get all nervous and begin asking yourself –
“Do I actually need more eggs? I thought I had some at home…but maybe I don’t? What about Fruity Pebbles? I know I’m a grown adult but I haven’t had them in a while. I deserve this, right?”
Next thing you know you’re walking down the aisles stuffing your shopping cart to the brim with all the sugary junk food that a 13-year-old would buy if they won a grocery spree and their parents were out of town in Cancun for the 10th time that year slurping down Mai Thai’s without inviting you even though you’re 13.
Okay, maybe that’s just me…?
Here’s what I’m getting at…
In order for you to create a reality you want to live (and get the actual groceries you need), you need to have intention with what exactly it is that you want, as well as conviction in that you will do whatever it takes to make it happen for yourself.
When you define your intention, you refine your implementation.
Whether that’s in your relationships with yourself or others, building a career based around your passions, working on your physical or emotional health, and so on, giving yourself intention behind what you’re striving after is what fuels the engine.
Getting clear on the life you desire to live is what allows you to better understand what steps you need to take to get there.
Just like having a list when you go into the grocery store. You know what you want, you know what you need, and you have a purpose behind going in – it’s not to just aimlessly wander the aisles like a zombie.
Here are a few questions that have helped me in defining more of my intentions on my personal growth journey:
- What is my dream life?
- Even if I knew I would fail, what would I still try to pursue and accomplish in my life?
- What impact do I want to make in this world?
- How can I use my natural talents to better serve others?
- What are all of the values I choose to live by?
Remember, your desires and values may evolve over time and that’s okay! I encourage to you answer and reflect on these questions every few months to see what changes and why they have changed. By getting some introspective on yourself, you’ll better know yourself and have a deeper understanding of why you are doing what you do.

The question I struggle with the most…
How can I use my natural talents to better serve others?
Taylor says
It’s definitely a quesiton that takes some deep reflection and requires a continual refinement. I may recommend writing out, or bubble charting, all of your skills and talents that bring you fulfillment when you utilize them.
Then, take each one of those skills and expand on them even more with a deeper series of questions.
(Ex. I love baking and making awesome baked goods. What demographic likes baking too? What is the content they’re looking at online that is successfully working? How can I use my baking skills to reach even more people online and bring joy to them, while also educating them on how to bake too? Can I do baking events in-person/online that can teach others how to bake too? What would those events look like? And so on…)
Start small with just one skill/talent/passion and dissect it from there so that you can get very clear on how you can create your own impact on people with it.
I hope that helps give you a bit more direction!
What are a few of your talents that you would want to dissect some more?
